Carlos Tevez has backed Marcelo Gallardo after the River coach decided to end his second spell, lamenting Argentina’s unforgiving climate for coaches, according to Radiogol.com.

He called Gallardo a club great and said coaching feels like an electric chair in Argentina. Every game can cost a job, and after only six or seven rounds three or four managers have already left.

He wished Gallardo well for what comes next, noting that two or three defeats can quickly put a job at risk.

His decision followed a 1-0 loss to Vélez in Liniers in the Torneo Apertura, a 12th loss in the last 20 matches.

He cancelled his press conference, took hours to reflect, then chose to end his second cycle, which began in August 2024 when he returned to Núñez to replace Martín Demichelis.

River won no titles in this period, the exception being the Supercopa Internacional they lost to Talleres on penalties from the previous regime. His second spell stands at 85 games, with 35 wins, 32 draws and 18 defeats.

Gallardo is set for a farewell on Thursday at the Monumental against Banfield, with the chance to sign off in front of home fans.
