Former Blue Jason Cundy has backed Chelsea to sign Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale as the club look to solve their goalkeeping issue.

The Blues have invested heavily in goalkeepers since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over in 2022, but despite that they are still lacking a top class shot stopper.

Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic arrived in the summer of 2023, whilst the club signed both Filip Jorgensen and teenager Mike Penders last summer.

Cundy on Chelsea goalkeeping situation

Sanchez once again started the season as number one, but following a series of costly errors he was replaced by Jorgensen after the defeat to Manchester City in January.

The Dane has done better, but he also made a howler against Aston Villa, which cost the Blues the game, although he registered a confidence boosting clean sheet against Southampton on Tuesday night.

The goalkeeper situation is currently a bit of a mess with arguably the club’s best goalkeeper Petrovic on loan at Strasbourg.

The Serbia international has impressed in France and manager Liam Rosenior has labelled him world class, but it’s unclear if he’s got a long term Chelsea future.

Chelsea are believed to have high hopes for both Jorgensen and Penders, but Cundy has had his say on the situation and suggested someone he believes would be an improvement.

“The goalkeeper has turned out to be a massive problem for Chelsea,” he told talkSPORT.

“Jorgensen dropped an absolute dolly against Aston Villa. We did enough to get a point there and the keeper made a howler, it was devastating for Chelsea.

“I would definitely have Ramsdale. That’s an improvement. [Caoimhin] Kelleher at Liverpool is another one they’re looking at.”

Ramsdale isn’t enjoying the best season for Southampton and the Blues could certainly do significantly better than the England international if they decide to bring a new keeper in.
