Getting Chelsea’s best players back to their best form is clearly a vital task for Xabi Alonso in his first season as manager.

With Xabi Alonso now confirmed as Chelsea’s new manager, there’s a lot of talk about his “in tray” – what he needs to get in hand right away as manager to get this team back on track and heading in the right direction.

Palmer needs to “wake up” and be Alonso’s Wirtz

Kieran Gill’s piece for the Daily Mail yesterday noted that “waking up” some of Chelsea’s key players is essential. Cole Palmer has been off it for more than a year now, with just a couple of good moments papering over the very serious cracks.

Gill thinks that Palmer could be used in the way that Florian Wirtz was by Alonso at Leverkusen – where the attacker was such a hit that Liverpool eventually splashed out £116m on him.

We don’t even need to worry about Palmer getting back to his world class peak yet – just get him to the point where he actually is worthy of a place in our starting eleven to begin with and we’ll be happy.

In other news…

We suspect that either or both Reece James and Joao Pedro will start on the bench tonight, with a game coming up at the weekend to think about.

McFarlane also promised his players were going to show plenty of passion and fight when they take on Tottenham later today.
