Espérance de Tunis qualified for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup through the CAF ranking system. While they did not win the CAF Champions League between 2021 and 2024, they consistently advanced deep into the tournament, accumulating enough ranking points to secure one of the African slots in the expanded 32-team format.

Espérance have appeared at the Club World Cup several times with mixed results. They first participated in 2011 and returned in 2018 and 2019 after winning the CAF Champions League. In 2018, they finished fifth, and in 2019, they again secured fifth place after defeating Al Sadd in the qualifying match.

How did they perform in the 2024/25 season?

Espérance successfully defended their Ligue 1 title and also won the Tunisian Super Cup. The Tunis outfit also completed the domestic treble in June as they beat Stade Tunisien in the Tunisian Cup final.

Espérance are currently managed by former Tunisia international Maher Kanzari. The 52-year-old has had a nomadic career but is back with the North African side for his third spell on the sidelines.

Who is their star player?

Espérance’s standout player is Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane, a versatile defensive midfielder who has also been known to fill in at centre-back. A Tunisia international to boot, Ben Romdhane has been a central figure in the club’s domestic and continental campaigns.

Expected performance at the Club World Cup

Drawn alongside Flamengo, Chelsea and León, Espérance will have it all to do to get out of the group stage.
