Manchester City won the race earlier this summer to sign highly regarded winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester City. Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Monga but in the end he chose to sign for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. In a new interview with the BBC, Monga has explained why he chose to join Manchester City over the Premier League champions. Also, Monga played his first minutes as a City player in their 3-1 friendly win over the K-League All-Stars and showed enough to show why there was a battle to sign him.

Jeremy Monga has revealed why he signed for Manchester City instead of Arsenal.

In an interview with Shamoon Hafez for the BBC, Jeremy Monga has explained why he chose to sign for Manchester City. Arsenal were eager to sign Monga from Leicester City, however City won the race to sign Monga. Speaking on why he chose to join Enzo Maresca’s side, Monga said: “It [Arsenal interest] was very strong because it was very close to me going there, very close. The main decision was probably the pathway and the club itself. They’ve been so successful that it was a no-brainer when City call. It’s every child’s dream to win trophies and be at the top with the best.

Once I get the opportunity I just need to show myself, and once I do that, everything will take care of itself. I feel like, to me personally, I see myself at City more. I see myself in blue.

The first glimpse of Jeremy Monga was full of promise against the K-League All-Stars.

Jeremy Monga replaced Rayan Ait-Nouri in the 62nd minute of Manchester City’s 3-1 win over the K-League All-Stars earlier today. By the time that Monga came on, the sting had gone out of the game due to the heat and the amount of substitutions both teams had made. However, the first glimpse of Jeremy Monga was full of promise as he showed snippets of why Manchester City were so keen to sign him.

Monga had a goal disallowed unluckily for an unfortunate handball. However, in that moment he showed his composure in the final third to beat K-League All-Star keeper Gu Sung-Yun. Also, Monga had opportunities to run at the K-League All-Stars defence on the left wing. The 17-year-old winger is a handful in possession, which was impossible to ignore. Monga is unlikely to be a prominent player for Manchester City this season. However, there is promise there and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him play in the cup competitions and off the bench for Enzo Maresca’s side on occasions.

Monga also played his first minutes for his new team against the K-League All-Stars and he showed enough to suggest that he is in the right environment to fulfil his undoubted potential.
