Sunderland’s window is accelerating after Thomas Meunier signed on Wednesday. Director of football Florent Ghisolfi now turns to outgoings and selective additions.

Sunderland Echo notes that, despite the bumper sale of Eliezer Mayenda, there is still scope to create more headroom while staying within Premier League and UEFA rules next season. Departures sit in two camps, those likely to command fees and those needing moves to kickstart careers, both easing the wage bill.

There is interest from multiple clubs in Simon Adingra, which could recoup a significant chunk of last summer’s payment to Brighton, bringing savings and cash even if SCR benefits are limited. As an academy graduate, Anthony Patterson would deliver a major SCR boost and he favours a permanent switch, though no deal is advanced and valuations must be met.

Leo Hjelde and Jenson Seelt are back for pre-season but are likely to move, with two years left making this a logical time if regular football is on offer. Ghisolfi is also working on the futures of Luis Hemir, Alan Browne, Arthur Masuaku, Aji Alese and Abdoullah Ba, where fees look modest and salaries complicate exits.

Ahmed Abdullahi is expected to leave on loan, with a permanent exit possible if the bid is right. Romaine Mundle, into the last two years and facing fierce left-flank competition, could go amid continental interest, which would strongly aid SCR. Wilson Isidor has two years left, but remains vital to Régis Le Bris’s squad, particularly after Mayenda’s sale.

Meunier’s arrival most likely ends the permanent pursuit of Lutsharel Geertruida, and at least three more signings are possible. A natural right winger is needed after Bertrand Traoré’s departure, with AS Roma’s Matías Soulé among options. Defensive focus is on the left, with Dennis Cirkin gone, Reinildo the only specialist, Trai Hume a capable cover, and a left-sided centre-back still sought after missing Jhon Lucumí, while Leeds United have moved for Tarik Muharemović from Sassuolo. Further attacking reinforcements could follow if there are more exits, but nothing like last summer’s influx.
