NJ/NY Gotham FC is a few weeks away from starting the 2025 NWSL season. After an offseason that saw a high turnover of players, fans are ready to cheer on the Bats in what will hopefully be another successful campaign.
One thing supporters were waiting for was the release of the new kits. In 2024, the NWSL released both new primary and secondary jerseys. However, this year, the entire league released secondary kits.
Notably, Gotham did slightly update the primary jersey, making the blue a little brighter and making the shirt "sleeker". It is still the same kit though, so the focus will be on the new release.
So, the club released the new secondary kit on Thursday. As always, the excitement level to see the new jersey was high. However, that died down very quickly.
There is no easier way to say this. The new kit is mostly bad. It might be one of the worst Gotham FC kits in recent history. It is not completely bad since the main color is sky blue, which supporters know and love from when the team was called Sky Blue FC. The color itself is great, and it is a nice honor to the team's history.
That is where it ends though. The texture look of the sky blue color is awful and gives a stripe-like look to the shirt. Understandably, it appears to be due to the material, for every NWSL kit has that this year. It is unknown whether the non-authentic jersey has the same material and look.
Then, the black on the shirt is not horrendous. However, the black running down the side is connected to the black on the shoulders. This looks like shoulder pads, which ruins the kit significantly. From the back, the black color at the top clashes with the blue. Per Gotham FC, the black is "a fashion-forward edge reflecting the stylish streets we call home". Undoubtedly, the team failed in that aspect.
Additionally, the shoulders distract from the sky blue. It was unnecessary, and it feels like those who designed the kit were trying too hard. It would be a little better without the ugly shoulder pads. The black should have been reserved for the edges of the shirt instead. They should have also left the badge alone, for the black makes it difficult to see the design.
Last year's secondary jersey was just okay, but now the new one probably makes some fans really miss the old one. Gotham FC's new kit is best described as a failure. The sky blue keeps it from being completely bad, but it is still a bad jersey.
