Pau Cubarsí’s breakthrough at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has quickly become one of the standout stories of Spain’s campaign.
The 19-year-old Barcelona defender has established himself as one of the tournament’s biggest revelations, delivering consistently outstanding performances despite his young age.
Cubarsi is the only player under the age of 20 to have played every minute for his national team at the tournament, highlights Mundo Deportivo.
He is also one of only three Spanish players to have played every minute so far, alongside Unai Simon and Marc Cucurella.
The confidence Luis de la Fuente has shown in Cubarsi is fully reflected in his performances.
Across the tournament, Cubarsi has attempted 449 passes, missing just 17, giving him an exceptional passing accuracy of 96%, with five key passes to boot.

Against Portugal in the Round of 16, he completed 71 of his 77 passes, with 34 of those successfully played in the opposition half, underlining both his composure and his willingness to progress the ball forward.
His distribution has been matched by equally impressive defensive numbers. So far in the tournament, Cubarsi has recorded 19 ball recoveries and 23 successful defensive actions.
His partnership with Aymeric Laporte has become one of Spain’s greatest strengths and has clearly earned the full confidence of the coaching staff.
Spain have also yet to concede a single goal, highlighting the defensive solidity of De la Fuente’s side.
With five clean sheets in five career World Cup matches, Cubarsi has become the fastest defender to reach that milestone in World Cups, edging past the legendary Paolo Maldini, who needed seven games to achieve that.
The consistency of the pairing has meant that Marc Pubill has played only a single minute during the World Cup, while Eric Garcia is still waiting to make his first appearance in the competition.
While the numbers are impressive, Cubarsi’s influence goes well beyond statistics.
The Barcelona defender has showcased exceptional composure in possession, an outstanding ability to break opposition lines with his passing, and remarkable maturity in one-on-one defensive situations.
Match after match, he continues to demonstrate why many observers now consider him one of the standout centre-backs of the entire World Cup, despite being just 19 years old.
