Madrid is currently in the middle of a battle for Real Madrid’s presidential seat, with two candidates going all in for the race.

Florentino Perez, who has enjoyed a monopoly over the club for decades, is the firm favourite to continue running the office, especially with several players, legends and members backing his presidency.

His competitor, Enrique Riquelme, however, is leaving no stone unturned in convincing members of the flaws in Perez’s ideas, especially those on selling a stake of the club to an external investor.

Casillas speaks

Real Madrid and Spain legend Iker Casillas, who recently joined Riquelme’s candidacy, spoke to the media, where he commented on the ongoing war between presidential candidates and the player links arising as a result of the same.

First, the legendary goalkeeper was asked about his thoughts on the battle of names between Enrique Riquelme and Florentino Perez, particularly the names of Jose Mourinho and Erling Haaland.

“In the end, the one who benefits from all this is Real Madrid. That’s the important thing, that big names come out,” he began.

He then spoke positively about both candidates and their desire to uplift the club further with good signings.

“The good thing is that when there are candidates for Real Madrid who want to do things right for Real Madrid.”

“Then everyone will choose the one they consider. All names are welcome,” he added on the numerous links.

On integrating Erling Haaland

Casillas was then asked if he saw it as possible for Haaland to fit into the same dressing room as Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, as Riquelme is pushing for his signing.

“I don’t know. Haaland, Mbappe, Vinicius and Mourinho can also fit in well. It would be curious.”

“Let’s see what comes out on Sunday. The one that comes out is the best for Madrid,” he added on the elections.

A battle of tactics

While both Riquelme and Perez have made massive announcements and promises ahead of the elections, both have adopted strongly polarised approaches towards the same.

The former has openly announced the name and identity of the players he is looking to target, including Rodri and Erling Haaland and hopes that the promise of big names can get him over the line.

Perez, meanwhile, has teased his signing with hints but refused to give up the name. He has announced a transfer worth €150 million, but his idea is that the suspense will amplify his chances of winning.
