PSG beat Arsenal on Saturday in a tense game, but as Joao Neves has pointed out, only one team was trying to play football.

Midfielder Joao Never has not pulled any punches while speaking about PSG’s win over Arsenal in the Champions League final on Saturday:

“It’s not even the victory itself that pleases me, but playing with such teammates, this staff, and this management. Coming here was the best decision I’ve ever made. I love everything here. We deserved it today, because PSG were the only team that wanted to play.”

“This year was different. It was harder, more physical [than last year] . We were European champions, so we defended our title. We’re part of PSG history 

Arsenal show essential flaw of passive style

He’s not wrong – Arsenal have been frustrating football fans all year with their time wasting, and Saturday’s early goal for the Gunners turned this into a particularly egregious example.

Still, they got their just rewards in the end, as they sat so deep that when PSG equalised, it proved impossible for Mikel Arteta’s team to get back into gear and onto the front foot again. That’s always the weakness of that type of negative football, and we saw the evidence on the biggest stage of all.

Ousmane Dembele and Achraf Hakimi started the Champions League final after all, despite major worries about their fitness right up until the teams came out.
