1. FC Union Berlin interim coach Marie-Louise Eta made history on Saturday, becoming the first female coach to lead a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Unfortunately for her and Die Eisernen, her debut did not go to plan, ending in a 1-2 defeat to relegation-threatened VfL Wolfsburg.

Speaking to Sky Germany after the match, Eta felt her side were unfortunate given their performance.

“From my point of view, the result doesn’t reflect the performance. I think we played a good match today; the stats also show that,” said Eta, whose team registered 25 shots – a season high for Union.

The coach also downplayed Ilyas Ansah’s frustrated reaction after being substituted in the second half, when he threw a bottle to the ground.

“The boys really want it. ‘Illy’ was disappointed because he felt there was more in it, that chances were there for a different result. That’s what you want. Everything is fine, all good. The boys are alive – you can see that – and everything’s okay.”

The defeat leaves Union 11th in the table, four points above the relegation zone.

Eta’s side face RB Leipzig away next week.
