Sunderland sealed seventh place and Europa League football with a 2-1 win over Chelsea, then player-by-player grades set the summer agenda. According to Sunderland Echo, the assessment outlines how performances could shape director of football Florent Ghisolfi’s plans.
Only players who featured in the Premier League and remain under contract are included.
Goalkeeper Robin Roefs was not top of the original shortlist, the club initially pursued more experienced options and were prepared to spend big on the position. He delivered outstanding first half numbers for save percentage and goals prevented, vital in keeping Sunderland clear of the bottom three. His level dipped slightly later but he stayed a dependable presence, unflappable with a high ceiling, graded A+.
Melker Ellborg arrived as cover and long term competition for Roefs, enabling Anthony Patterson to head out on loan. Sunderland won two of the three league games he played during Roefs' injury, including at St James’ Park. A tough afternoon at Port Vale reflected his inexperience but it was a solid start, earning a B.
Nordi Mukiele quickly looked a cut above, excelling defensively at centre back and offering an attacking outlet at right back. He delivered on the big occasions, notably in the home win over Newcastle United. A key voice in the group and one of the club’s transformative additions, he is graded A*.
Trai Hume was one of the EFL era survivors to thrive, finishing with the third most minutes. He impressed across several roles and rarely put a foot wrong. His final day volley set Sunderland on their way to Europe, and with that attitude Le Bris could not have asked for more, an A* season.
