For the first time since 2006, Real Madrid are set to head into a presidential election where actual votes will be cast by the members of the club.
For over two decades, Florentino Perez has been the undisputed leader of the club. As one of the most influential figures in the club’s history, nobody dared to oppose him even if elections were called.
This time, however, Enrique Riquelme has stepped up as a candidate and the club’s Electoral Board officially announced that his candidature was accepted earlier today. Real Madrid, thus, will have elections in the coming weeks.
As reported by ABC in a recent update, it is expected that both candidates will have two weeks to campaign and gain the support of socis before the elections.

Such a situation will mean that the elections will only be held in the first week of June, likely on Sunday, June 7th.
The club, however, are also working on a parallel possibility that the candidates be given just one week to campaign and make a case for their project, in which case the election date will be moved up to Sunday, May 31st.
At this point, it remains unclear as to which of the two dates will be selected by the club, but what is clear is that the dust will settle in two weeks anyhow.
Real Madrid have a massive summer transfer window ahead after going two seasons trophy-less, and are set to make massive changes not only in the dressing room but the managerial situation as well.

The presidential election and its timing, however, leave the administration and decision-making paralysed until the next president is confirmed, for both candidates will have different plans in mind.
As it stands, Riquelme’s team are reportedly pushing for at least one debate with Florentino Perez before the election, and it remains to be seen what comes of the situation. Everything will boil down to the date of the polling.
