After five years away from the dugout, the former Celtic full-back took charge of the Scottish Championship side this summer and has made a decent start at Firhill since succeeding Brian Graham as manager. Having swept through the group stages in July with five straight victories, Thistle then beat Scott Brown’s Ayr United 2-0 to book their place in Sunday’s quarter-final.

In his pre-match comments, Wilson discussed his approach for the upcoming game and also addressed the issues currently surrounding Celtic off the pitch.

“There’s always a crisis at Celtic. I’ve been through many myself. But when you look at where they are sitting at the top of the table, they aren’t doing too badly.”

Speaking to his former colleague at Clyde 1 Superscoreboard Gordon Duncan to Sky Sports, Wilson said: “There’s always a crisis at Celtic. I’ve been through many myself. But when you look at where they are sitting at the top of the table, they aren’t doing too badly.”

The former Celtic right-back added: “I get the Champions League thing, and the transfer window always comes with a big crowd. But I’m pretty sure Brendan Rodgers and the players, if they keep winning games, that cloud will disperse pretty quickly.”

Wilson continued: “Again, they’ve added to their squad since then. They are incredibly strong; they’ve been together a long, long time. I’m sure Brendan Rodgers is maybe a bit frustrated in terms of how things worked out in the transfer window.”

“Obviously, we need to be on top of our game, and they need to be off it to get anything.”

“But in terms of domestic form? I’m sure he’s pretty pleased. I think it’s important that we don’t change a lot of the ideas that we’ve actually put in place this summer.”

“Then, there becomes a level of uncertainty,” Mark Wilson said. “Winning games gives the team belief, no matter who they are up against. But of course, they know the challenge. It’s the toughest one they could get in this country. Obviously, we need to be on top of our game, and they need to be off it to get anything.”

Following Celtic’s short trip to Maryhill, the side will then travel out to the Serbian capital for Wednesday night’s Europa League opener against Red Star Belgrade and for many of the older generation of Celtic supporters this will bring back fond memories of 1968 and Jimmy Johnstone’s finest night at Celtic Park.
