On the latest Molby On The Spot podcast, former Liverpool legend Jan Molby joined host Trev Downey to preview Liverpool’s upcoming home clashes against Brighton and Bayer Leverkusen. Both matches present different kinds of challenges for Arne Slot’s men, who aim to secure crucial points in both the Premier League and Champions League. With a blend of tactical analysis and seasoned insight, Molby shed light on what to expect from each fixture and the importance of Liverpool’s adaptability in managing these high-stakes games.
The first of Liverpool’s back-to-back home fixtures will see them host Brighton in what Molby described as “an entirely different kettle of fish.” Despite some key injuries, Brighton remain a formidable opponent, sitting comfortably mid-table. Molby praised the “brave” approach of Brighton’s manager, who encourages his side to play their natural attacking game, even against top clubs. “They’ll play their stuff, they’ll be brave,” Molby remarked, expecting a high-energy match that Liverpool must be prepared to control both defensively and offensively.
Reflecting on Brighton’s squad, Molby highlighted some standout performers and potential threats, such as Danny Welbeck, who he described as “ever so good at 33” due to his pace and ability to “run in behind” defences. Molby also mentioned the dynamic presence of winger Kaoru Mitoma, noting how his speed and agility have caused challenges for opposition defenders. Given these threats, Molby sees the need for Liverpool’s defence to be tightly coordinated, particularly on the flanks, where Brighton have the capability to break through with pace.
Molby’s analysis didn’t stop at Brighton’s attacking prowess. He acknowledged some defensive weaknesses within Brighton’s squad, suggesting that Liverpool could exploit these gaps with their own offensive talents. “I fancy Brighton to score… but they’re vulnerable at the back,” Molby said, predicting an intense encounter where both sides will look to attack. Molby’s score prediction? A 3-1 win for Liverpool, provided they maintain focus and capitalise on Brighton’s lapses.

Following the Premier League fixture, Liverpool will host Bayer Leverkusen, marking their most challenging Champions League clash yet. Molby acknowledged Leverkusen’s strengths, calling them “the biggest challenge so far” in Europe. Under the leadership of former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen have made an impressive start to their Champions League campaign and bring a high-intensity style that is likely to test Liverpool’s resilience.
Molby believes Alonso’s approach will remain unchanged despite the difficult Anfield venue, suggesting that Liverpool may need to take a more tactical approach rather than relying on high-paced exchanges. “We’re also capable… of controlling games without the ball,” Molby observed, pointing to Slot’s ability to instil a more restrained game plan. He suggested that Liverpool may cede possession at times, controlling Leverkusen’s movement and limiting their space. Molby expects Liverpool’s defensive organisation to be key, particularly in managing Leverkusen’s potent attack led by players like Florian Wirtz and Victor Boniface.
In contrast to the Brighton match, Molby expects the Leverkusen fixture to be a more methodical encounter, with Liverpool focusing on nullifying the German side’s strengths. “Leverkusen might get a goal,” Molby conceded, but he maintained confidence in Liverpool’s overall superiority at home, predicting a controlled 2-1 victory. Molby also expressed admiration for Alonso’s managerial development, recognising that his tactical evolution will make Leverkusen a formidable opponent both domestically and in Europe.

As Molby assessed both matches, he returned to the influence of Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot. Known for his adaptability, Slot has encouraged Liverpool to take a flexible approach, whether playing high-tempo football or adopting a more conservative style when required. Molby remarked on the significance of this evolution, especially in matches like these where diverse tactical demands come into play. Slot’s ability to shift Liverpool’s tactics on a match-by-match basis could prove critical as the team navigates the dual pressures of the Premier League and Champions League.
In his predictions, Molby conveyed optimism about Liverpool’s chances in both fixtures, stressing that a well-organised defence and capitalising on opportunities will be key to securing wins. He noted that Slot’s Liverpool possesses “a calm resilience,” a quality essential to overcoming Brighton’s pressing style and Leverkusen’s disciplined European approach. Both matches, in Molby’s view, will test Liverpool’s depth and their ability to execute Slot’s tactical vision.
With two significant games on the horizon, Liverpool fans have much to look forward to at Anfield. Molby’s preview offers a compelling look at the challenges ahead and the ways Liverpool can rise to meet them, keeping their domestic and European ambitions firmly in sight.
