Thiago Scuro under pressure amid AS Monaco reshuffle, Carlos Avina’s remit may grow | OneFootball

AS Monaco are reshaping internal responsibilities during a turbulent spell, and it appears Carlos Avina may take a broader sporting brief at the expense of director general Thiago Scuro.

The club said the recent meetings at La Turbie were to reorganise work and flows. It insisted there has been no promotion or change of title, only a tidy-up of daily management across performance, medical and team management.

Monaco qualified for the Champions League play-offs with a 0-0 draw against Juventus, yet sit 10th with four points from the last nine league games, one win, one draw, seven defeats. They meet Paris-SG on 17 and 25 February. President Dimitri Rybolovlev visited La Turbie with bodyguards the next day for a series of meetings.

In some meetings, staff were told to report sporting matters to Avina, hinting at a quiet shift in the performance centre’s chain of command. The Mexican, 35, was made technical director by Scuro in August 2023 after roles at Club America and Cercle Bruges from 2020 to 2023. He has worked closely with Scuro for three years.

Scuro, 44, arrived in June 2023 as sporting director, became director general that October, and extended his deal last summer. After two years satisfying the presidency, results and performances slumped in autumn. He sacked Adi Hütter in October, failed to land Edin Terzic, then appointed Sébastien Pocognoli, a switch that has not convinced, while recent windows disappointed and ultras have demanded his exit, citing injuries, cut-price recruitment and failed punts such as Paul Pogba and Ansu Fati.
