According to The Laziali, this week spans scudetto celebrations in 1974 and Cup Winners Cup triumph, while also honouring former president Olindo Bitetti.
On 18 May 2000, a 0-0 at Inter in the Coppa Italia final second leg secured the trophy and a historic double. A day later in 1974, a 2-2 at Bologna, through Petrelli and Chinaglia, unfolded in party atmosphere.
On 20 May 1923, Lazio won 3-0 at Ideale Bari to go top. On 21 May 1989, a Ruben Sosa penalty beat Fiorentina 1-0. On 22 May 1983, a 2-1 win over Atalanta ended a two-month wait and lifted hopes amid talk of Giorgio Chinaglia buying the club.
On 19 May 1999 at Villa Park, Lazio beat RCD Mallorca 2-1 to lift the last Cup Winners Cup. Christian Vieri headed Beppe Pancaro’s long pass over Carlos Roa after seven minutes, then Dani equalised on 10 following Francisco Soler’s cross from Leonardo Biagini’s pass.
Lazio dominated possession, Mallorca stayed dangerous on the break, and it was 1-1 at half time.
In the 56th minute Sergio Conceição replaced the injured Dejan Stankovic. With nine minutes left, after Matias Almeyda and Marcelo Salas combined and Vieri’s effort was blocked and looped up, Pavel Nedved fired the winner.
Alessandro Nesta lifted the trophy, and the team swapped yellow and black for light blue and white to celebrate with the travelling support.
Also remembered is Olindo Bitetti, pivotal in resisting the AS Roma merger, who died in Rome on 22 May 1973.
