A quiet slice of Lazio history this week still delivers three notable fixtures and a tribute to Augusto Parboni. According to The Laziali, the club’s archive highlights comebacks, cup stakes and a stalwart from the 1920s.
On Sunday six July 1947 at the Stadio Comunale in Turin, Juventus and Lazio drew 3-3. Lazio came from behind to take a point.
On Sunday eight July 1928 at Campo Rondinella, Rome, Lazio beat Livorno 2-1 in the Coppa CONI. The win kept alive a glimmer of hope of reaching the final.
On Saturday 12 July 1958 at the Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Lazio and Roma finished 1-1 in the Coppa Italia. Lazio had the better of the first half, Roma the second, and the Biancocelesti advanced to the quarter-finals.
Born in Rome on 24 February 1900, Parboni joined Lazio in 1920 and stayed until 1927, making 83 appearances and scoring six goals. He featured in the 1923 national finals and was regarded as an elegant, astute defender.
He is said to have written to Il Calcio’s director to protest media treatment of Lazio, with Genoa hailed before the contest had begun. Parboni died in Rome on 12 July 1984.
Birthdays this week include Luigi Milano, Paolo Bernasconi, Arnaldo Lucentini, Tijani Noslin, Jesse Carver, Paolo Di Canio, Jony, Giorgio Venturin and Christian Vieri.
