Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sport Bild, Thomas Müller, now of Vancouver Whitecaps, reflected on his contract situation at Bayern Munich which led him to bid farewell to his boyhood club this summer.
“The club had already made its decision internally but hadn’t communicated it to me yet. When Uli Hoeneß then tried to ‘build a bridge for me’ and spoke publicly about my contract situation at my documentary’s premiere; I honestly didn’t find that very helpful. I would have preferred a more direct approach,” said Müller.
The Raumdeuter was quick to praise the rest of his departure program, adding: “Anyone who knows me knows that I value transparency and directness. Despite the somewhat bumpy start, my farewell from FC Bayern over the past few months turned out to be extraordinary and truly special for me.”
When asked about whether he was disappointed with how his Bayern exit was initiated, Müller made it clear: “No, I wasn’t disappointed. As I already mentioned in my letter back in early April, the communication around the end of my contract wasn’t ideal. I also made it clear to those responsible that I wasn’t happy with it; it left a bit of a sour taste.”
Müller continued: “The decision not to offer me a new contract came as a surprise at the time, especially considering the way things had been communicated up until that point. But that’s old news now and all sides have already spoken about it in detail.”
