Frustrated Three Lions boss honest in his assessment of a flat performance against minnows in which they scored only once

Thomas Tuchel criticised his England team for a performance against Andorra that was “by far not good enough”, calling out their “attitude” in the final stages of the match.

England laboured to a 1-0 win over the nation ranked 173rd in the world on Saturday, with Harry Kane’s second-half strike the only goal of the game at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona.

Victory made it three wins from three in World Cup qualifying, but England’s performance against Andorra was dour and left their head coach reeling.

“I’m not happy with the performance, of course,” Tuchel told ITV Sport after the match.

“We started quite well in the first 25 minutes. This was the only part where I had the feeling it was a matter of time.

“We created a lot of chances, half-chances, and a lot of set-pieces. I felt we would score and keep going, but we completely lost the momentum.

“We couldn’t get it back through the whole first half. We got a little bit of it back in the first 15 minutes of the second half, and then ended up in a period that was by far not good enough, with a lack of urgency, lack of quality, and lack of energy.

“We can just admit it: that’s not what we expect from us. We need to do better. We must look at it in detail and address it directly and do better on Tuesday [against Senegal].”

Tuchel, who cut a frustrated figure as he spoke pitch-side, added: “We had a good 25 minutes but then couldn’t keep the energy up. It was as simple as that.

“I was the most worried in the last 20 minutes, because I did not like the attitude with which we ended this game — almost like we have to play until the 93rd minute.

“I didn’t like the lack of urgency. It did not match the occasion: a World Cup qualifier away from home.

“All the players know, because I said it in the dressing room.”

England are in action again on Tuesday night when they host Senegal in a friendly at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground.
