Jason Steele will effectively be on trial for an England World Cup role during this month’s international camp, with Thomas Tuchel saying he could be taken in a support capacity.
According to TheArgus.co.uk, the England head coach wants to see how Steele fits around friendlies with Uruguay and Japan this month.
Tuchel named a 35-man squad for the two games and said not all players would be together at the same time. Some will join after the Friday night meeting with Uruguay, while Steele will be involved from the start.
When the summer tournament comes around, he could travel alongside the three registered goalkeepers. Tuchel added that no one has a guaranteed place and the assessment happens in March, noting England’s habit of taking four keepers to tournaments.
Steele, 35, has never previously been called into a senior squad. He represented Team GB at the 2012 Olympics and won 34 age-group caps, seven of them for the under-21s.
