Lee Grant will name Walsall’s new captain before next season, according to ExpressAndStar.com. With recruitment ongoing, an incoming signing could still claim the armband.

Former skipper Jamille Matt was among 12 players released, with Aden Flint and Brandon Comley also leaving. From the current group, three candidates emerge.

Alex Pattison impressed in a difficult second half of the campaign and brings Bradford City promotion experience. His measured media manner appeals, although fitness is a caveat after a stop-start post-January and absences against Swindon Town and Cheltenham Town.

Albert Adomah, a fans’ favourite who turns 39 in December, is five short of 800 club appearances. Grant evidently feels he still has more to give, his enthusiasm and personality carrying captaincy appeal. If used wisely he could influence matters on and off the pitch.

Midfielder Sven Sprangler joined from St Johnstone over the weekend and could lead in a summer of 14 departures. He signed a two-year deal with an option after impressing on loan at Newport County in League Two, has more than 350 senior games, and captained St Johnstone several times in early 2025.
