Tomás Soucek gave West Ham United the lead against Manchester United on Tuesday night and in doing so became the top Czech scorer in Premier League history.

The Hammers first signed Soucek from Slavia Praha on an initial loan midway through the 2019/20 season and since then he has become a key player for the club with his characteristic tough-tackling style and his penchant for popping up with crucial goals.

Indeed, despite being primarily a defensive-minded midfielder, Soucek has hit double figures in all competitions both the 2020/21 and 2023/24 seasons for West Ham.

Until Tuesday, when Soucek popped up at the near post to convert Jarrod Bowen's low cross, he had been tied with another famous Premier League Czech, Patrik Berger.

Both players had 38 goals at the start of the week with Berger having netted for Liverpool, Portsmouth, and Aston Villa in the competition over 229 games from September 1996 until May 2008.

Soucek reached 39 goals even quicker, taking the 30-year-old just 217 games to become the outright top Czech scorer in the competition.

The midfielder's first goal the equaliser to make it 1-1 in the 3-2 win at home to Chelsea back July 2020 making him one of 13 Czech players in total to have netted in the Premier League.
