Blackburn Rovers are among several Championship clubs monitoring Sunderland midfielder Alan Browne ahead of a potential move this summer.

The Lancashire Telegraph reports that Tony Mowbray is interested in signing the 31-year-old after his return to Ewood Park as head coach earlier this summer. Browne’s extensive second-tier experience has drawn widespread interest.

Browne featured regularly for Middlesbrough following his deadline-day loan to the Riverside last summer and was named Championship player of the month during that spell. A return is seen as unlikely this summer as the club prioritises other midfield targets, leaving rivals on alert and the midfielder expected to depart Sunderland later in the window.

No deal is advanced and Browne has flown to the USA with his Sunderland team-mates. He started the opening pre-season friendly against York City and is expected to play a prominent role against Liverpool, Leeds United and Wrexham in Granit Xhaka’s absence.

Xhaka is on a summer break after his World Cup commitments and will link up with Sunderland ahead of the friendly with RC Lens. Browne has one year left on his contract, so the Black Cats are unlikely to seek a significant fee, but will want loan or permanent terms that strengthen their position and reflect his pedigree.
