Inter Milan head coach Cristian Chivu has stressed the importance of mentality and ambition as his side close in on the Serie A title, while also offering updates on key players ahead of the trip to Torino.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, with quotes via FCInterNews, Chivu underlined the approach he expects from his team at this crucial stage of the season.
“We need the right attitude to win the game and to try to be dominant, and to understand the moments,” he said.
He also insisted there is no panic within the squad despite the pressure of the run-in.
“We are calm as always and aware of the work we have done. We know how much we have worked, but we also know there are still games and points left to reach one of our objectives,” Chivu added.
Reflecting on Inter’s consistency across the campaign, the coach pointed to the bigger picture beyond recent results.
“I speak about the whole season. We arrived at the break with a good lead. The defeat against Milan brought some criticism, but we had the chance to respond with good performances.
“The Roma game was important, and at Como we knew the difficulty and we managed it.”
When asked about the club’s identity and ambitions, Chivu was clear about expectations at San Siro.
“This team has always tried to do something extraordinary and has always been competitive. When you coach Inter, you have to aim big. This team has shown how competitive it is, and that has always been our goal.”
He also addressed Inter’s attacking style and evolution.
“Goals come when you are proactive. It depends on the opponent, but the most important thing is to play forward. It would be a shame not to use the individual quality of these players.
“The days when the best defence wins the league are gone. Football is faster now. Even Bayern-Real finished 4-3. The game is all about transitions and you have to adapt.”
On team news, Chivu provided updates on several key figures. “Lautaro has improved and next week he should return to training with the group,” he confirmed. “Sommer, we will see tomorrow.”
He also offered encouragement regarding Alessandro Bastoni’s condition and highlighted the contribution of one of his midfield options. “Bastoni is improving,” Chivu said. “Sucic deserves credit.”
The coach praised the Croatian midfielder for playing despite an injury to his hand, which Chivu claims has impacted his ability to win duels.
Looking ahead, Chivu reflected on his experience at Inter and the spirit within the squad.
“I am lucky to coach a team I already knew. Nothing surprised me in terms of professionalism. What has impressed me most is the human side of the players and their sense of belonging. The unity has really struck me.”
Inter travel to Torino knowing a win would bring them closer to the Scudetto, with Chivu’s side still balancing ambition, pressure and squad management at a decisive stage of the season.
Finally, Chivu was asked about Aleksandar Stanković, who has been linked with a return to Inter Milan this summer.
“We’re moving beyond today, talking about the transfer market and the team he’ll be playing for,” the coach said.
“We’re following him closely; we know how much he’s done since leaving the Primavera where I was.
“He’s like a son to me; I’ve known him since he was 4 or 5; we all know how much he’s grown in the last two years.
“If we decided to give him experience in a competitive league, playing in the Champions League, it was to help him take a step consistent with his growth. When we talk about the transfer market, we’ll have no hesitation in thinking about him.”
