John Benjamin Toshack, 77, the former Real Madrid and Real Sociedad manager, has dementia, his son Cameron said.

"If we speak in the afternoon, he might not remember that we also spoke in the morning," Cameron Toshack said, telling the Daily Mail. "Ask him about Liverpool, Real Sociedad or Real Madrid and he recalls every detail."

"He recently talked me through a Madrid match against Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan and how he adjusted his midfield to contain Van Basten," he added.

In September he received Real Sociedad’s gold and diamond badge during Real Madrid’s visit to Anoeta. Xabi Alonso, then Madrid head coach and a player Toshack had handed his debut, took part.

In San Sebastián he became a club legend by winning the 1987 Copa del Rey, a success that led to Real Madrid, where he won a league title. He managed both clubs in two spells, and in Spain also coached Deportivo, lifting the 1995 Supercopa, and Murcia.

As a player he was a Liverpool icon of the 1970s, winning three English league titles, two European Cups and two UEFA Cups.
