The Hammers needed to beat Leeds at home on Sunday and hope that Spurs lost to Everton.

Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson made sure that West Ham did what was required of them, but a Joao Palhinha goal six miles down the road proved their efforts were in vain.

It ends West Ham’s 14-year stay in the English top flight, and is only their third since the formation of the Premier League.

For Spurs, it is a sense of relief rather than celebration. A miserable season which featured just two wins in 2026 and just three home victories in total.

The number matched their number of managers, as the appointment of Thomas Frank last summer proved disastrous, and the subsequent hiring of Igor Tudor on an interim basis was catastrophic.

The hiring of Roberto De Zerbi in April proved pivotal, winning three of his seven games in charge to finish two points clear of the relegation zone.

West Ham are relegated with 39 points, which is the most in a 38-game season since the Hammers went down with 42 in the 2002-03 season.

A change of manager in September, as Nuno Espirito Santo succeeded the sacked Graham Potter, did not improve performances or results still a mini-revival in January sparked, ironically, with victory at Spurs.

But the facts are that Nuno took West Ham from 19th in the table, to 18th. It remains unclear whether Nuno would stay around for a Championship campaign, or is the club would even want him to. Scott Parker, who recently left Burnley, was been tipped to replace him.

For Spurs, it is a season from which to learn lessons. The Lewis family have a huge summer ahead of them to rebuild trust in the fanbase and give De Zerbi a squad to climb up the table.

The benefits of no European football is clear, and Spurs, along with Chelsea, must make the most of their rivals being distracted. De Zerbi is here to stay and has given Spurs hope.
