Since losing Inigo Martinez in the previous summer transfer window, FC Barcelona have continuously been linked with defensive reinforcements as they look to strengthen their backline. Although the club opted not to sign a centre back during the winter market, several names continue to appear on their radar ahead of the next summer window.

Among them is Cristian Romero. According to Mundo Deportivo, reports from England claim that the Argentine defender has decided to seek a change of scenery in June, and his name has once again surfaced on the Barcelona radar. Despite being under contract with Tottenham Hotspur until 2029 and holding the captain’s armband, Romero is reportedly open to leaving the club at the end of the season.

The report from MD, citing TEAMTalk, states that the motivation behind Romero’s desire to leave is his strained relationship with Tottenham’s board. This tension was made public following a recent Premier League match, after which the defender wrote on Instagram:

“Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible. I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially because we only had 11 players available. Incredible but true, and embarrassing.”

Romero has already been linked with a potential move away from Spurs in recent months, with Atlético Madrid previously mentioned as a possible destination. However, Barcelona’s interest in the Argentine is not new. The centre back had already been on the club’s shortlist several seasons ago, to the point where an offer was even discussed.

At the time, it was reported that one of the reasons behind Barcelona’s interest was advice from Lionel Messi, who allegedly urged the club to reinforce their defence. An offer worth €40 million plus an additional €10 million in variables was said to have been considered, although Messi later denied having made such a request.

With Romero once again appearing in Barcelona’s orbit and his situation at Tottenham becoming increasingly delicate, the coming months could prove decisive. Financial constraints remain a factor for the Catalan club, but the Argentine defender continues to be a profile that is highly regarded internally.
