Spurs will be sweating over key men ahead of huge Liverpool clash
Igor Tudor does not know whether Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha will be available for selection against Liverpool at the weekend after the pair appeared to suffer concussion injuries during Tottenham’s 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Spurs’ Champions League aspirations went up in smoke at the Estadio Metropolitano as mistakes from Antonin Kinsky and Micky van de Ven saw them ship three goals inside a chaotic first 15 minutes in Madrid.
Things did not get much better for the north London club after that, despite goals from Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke.
They ended the game down to nine men after Romero and Palhinha suffered a clash of heads.
The pair were treated for several minutes on the pitch after the incident, with Palhinha substituted, while Romero tried to carry on before eventually coming off deep into stoppage time at the end of the second half.
FA concussion protocols state that if a player is judged to be concussed, then the player should be supervised for 24 hours and begin a six-stage 'return to play' process, which starts with an initial 48-hour period of rest with minimal physical and 'cognitive' activities.
After that stage, the FA then recommends "a staged and graduated return to full daily activities", where "football training is allowed, but at a rate that does not worsen existing symptoms more than mildly or produce new symptoms".
Spurs have five days until they travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool, and Tudor has admitted he does not know if he will have Romero or Palhinha available.
“I don't know,” Tudor said post-match. “We will see. I don't know.”
On an evening when nothing went right for Spurs, Tudor said the coming together between Romero and Palhinha was indicative of where the club was at right now and admitted, “it looks like everything is against us” after his winless start at Spurs extended to four games.
“It is incredible,” he continued. “We finished the game and we see the two players [come off] and there is Micky [Van de Ven], who is out with a red card [for the trip to Anfield].
“Sometimes it is difficult to explain. It looks like everything is against us. Incredible things.”
