In a recent report, Danny Rust claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are keen on recruiting Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke. It has been mentioned that Spurs are showing interest in acquiring the services of the Dutch defender, who is stalling on penning a new contract with the Seagulls.
Van Hecke enjoyed a decent run of form at the Premier League club as he was responsible for putting in a run of solid performances at the heart of their backline. The Dutch defensive ace participated in 39 matches for Brighton last season, netting one goal and earning one assist across various competitions.
The 25-year-old was a solid presence on the defensive end of the field after he made 45 tackles, 37 blocks, 24 interceptions and 142 clearances in the Premier League. He was even tidy when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass success rate of 88.2% in the English first division (stats via fbref.com).
Van Hecke’s current contract at Brighton will expire in the summer of 2027. Therefore, Spurs could potentially recruit him on the cheap at the end of this season.

Van Hecke is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to make some important interceptions for his side inside his half. He usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and can even play his way out from the back.
Standing at 1.89m, the Dutch sensation can use his robust frame to win a few aerial duels for his team. He has already proven his worth in the Premier League and won’t take much time to settle into life at Tottenham.
Van Hecke would add more bite and steel to Spurs head coach Thomas Frank’s defence. He has what it takes to compete for a regular first-team spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the next few years.
At 25, Van Hecke will only get with each season. Hence, he would be an excellent fit for the North London club’s needs next year. The Dutch talent might even help Tottenham compete for more trophies in the future.
