Spurs spurned huge opportunity to propel themselves away from relegation trouble

Tottenham may have missed their chance to move clear of the Premier League relegation zone on Monday, but they were handed no fresh injury blows.

Spurs drew 1-1 with Leeds United in a tense affair at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where Mathys Tel went from hero to zero, scoring a spectacular opener before conceding a penalty that proved decisive.

The point moves Roberto De Zerbi’s injury-ravaged side just two clear of West Ham after the Hammers’ 1-0 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday.

There are two games left to play this term, with Spurs set to travel to Chelsea next, and Nuno Espirito Santo’s Irons must visit Newcastle.

With that said, here is all the latest Tottenham injury news and potential return dates...

Xavi Simons

Xavi Simons was one of the various Tottenham players to be struck down with injury shortly after De Zerbi’s takeover.

He ruptured his ACL shortly after scoring the winner away at Wolves. He received treatment on the pitch and attempted to play on, but was ultimately forced off.

Spurs later confirmed the injury in a statement, and Simons is now in for a lengthy spell of rehabilitation, which will see him miss the World Cup and the opening matches of next season.

Following the diagnosis, Simons wrote on Instagram: “They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way. My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it.

“Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense. All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me, along with the World Cup.”

Potential return date: Winter 2026

Dominic Solanke

it is hoped that Dominic Solanke can play again this season despite suffering a new hamstring injury against Wolves, which saw him hooked before half time.

Reports emerged suggesting the injury would be a season-ender, but De Zerbi seems cautiously optimistic that he could return in time for Tottenham’s penultimate match of the season against Chelsea.

"About Solanke, he's improving very quickly. I don't know, for this game, I don't know if he can be available," he said. "We hope for the next game in Stamford Bridge."

Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero’s season was ended in De Zerbi’s first match in charge of Spurs, suffering a serious knee injury in defeat at Sunderland.

The injury came in a collision with Antonin Kinsky, and it was later confirmed that he would not return to the pitch this campaign.

It remains to be seen whether he will be able to represent Argentina at this summer’s World Cup.

“I don’t know if there is a chance to play one game, two games, I don’t know. I hope so. But I don’t know,” De Zerbi said.

“But for him, I would like it if he can be available to play in the World Cup, especially for an Argentinian player. They feel the national team more than Italian players or other nations.”

Potential return date: Summer 2026

Mohammed Kudus has not played for Tottenham since Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland in January, and those 18 minutes will prove to be his last of this season.

He suffered a hamstring injury then, and suffered a setback in his recovery in early April which will leave him sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Spurs revealed in a statement that he may need to undergo surgery, but no decision has yet been taken.

De Zerbi said: “I don’t know [if Kudus will require surgery]. Not spoken with the doctor about the Kudus situation.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Guglielmo Vicario

Guglielmo Vicario finds himself on the comeback trail after undergoing a hernia operation during the April international break.

The club claim that the procedure was timed so as to minimally impact Vicario’s involvement in the run-in, but he has now missed five matches and counting.

He had not yet trained with his team-mates when De Zerbi last met the press ahead of faicng Leeds.

The coach said of his countryman: “Vicario is still the first [choice] goalkeeper [at] Tottenham. Because what Vicario showed this season is enough to consider him a top player for us.

“But we have to consider the physical condition, the period – how many games he missed. We will see when Vicario will be good.”

Dejan Kulusevski

Dejan Kulusevski is yet to appear for Tottenham this season as he recovers from a nebulous knee injury, for which he has undergone multiple surgeries.

The first came in May 2025, and he has not yet returned to first-team training despite regularly sharing videos to his social media of himself rehabbing.

The Swede had set his heart on representing his nation at this summer’s World Cup, but that seems an increasingly unlikely prospect with tournament squads due to be named in the coming weeks.

“For me, it’s difficult to understand how [Kulusevski] can play at the World Cup if he didn’t play any games this season,” said De Zerbi.

After his most recent procedure in late March, Kulusevski said: “It was really positive to undergo this small operation and be able to identify the problem. Now everything should be sorted out.

“It’s just a matter of slowly and surely coming back. I can see the light. It feels better now. I really have a positive feeling about [the] World Cup in two or three months.”

Wilson Odobert

Wilson Odobert’s season was brought to an unceremonious early finish when he ruptured his ACL in February during a 2-1 defeat by Tottenham.

He went under the knife shortly after and is now rehabilitating at Hotspur Way. He is expected to remain sidelined through the latter stages of the year.

Welsh defender Ben Davies seems to have played his last match for Tottenham.
