This was the ideal response to Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring after being played in by Xavi Simons, and Wilson Odobert then doubled the lead shortly after the break.

A straight red card for Johnson threatened to sour things, but Spurs instead burst into life in attack with ten men.

Micky van de Ven scored what will surely be the goal of the season, running the length of the pitch, before Joao Palhinha added further gloss to the scoreline. Richarlison wasted his chance to make it five, blasting a penalty against the bar.

Here’s how Standard Sport rated the Spurs players...

Guglielmo Vicario 7

A quieter night after his recent heroics. Confident in claiming the ball when Copenhagen swung in crosses and did what he needed to with four routine saves.

Pedro Porro 8

Some lovely crossfield switches out to the left wing and then put two chances on a plate for Richarlison, throwing his hand up in frustration after the second was missed.

Cristian Romero 8

Positive on the ball, firing line-breaking passes through to Simons. Also quickly on the scene to mop up after mistakes from team-mates. Led from the front again.

A ridiculous player. Puskas worthy goal as he ran near enough the length of the pitch in the blink of an eye. Single-handedly restored calm to the stadium after a red card.

Destiny Udogie 7

Started really brightly in combining with Odobert and gave Spurs’ left wing a much more dangerous feel. Faded slightly, understandably considering lack of football.

Rodrigo Bentancur 8

Pressing machine with Joao Palhinha starting on the bench, full of energy after recent criticism. Composed on the ball too and more progressive with his passing.

Pape Matar Sarr 7

Slow start but grew into the game. Came alive when Spurs went down to ten men and seemingly relished the extra running required. Much more like it.

Brennan Johnson 7

Clinical as ever when his chance came. Drove well with the ball too, before being shown an incredibly harsh straight red card. Did enough to push his case to start against Manchester United.

Xavi Simons 8

Superb first-half performance. Thrived in the space Copenhagen offered him centrally and should have had three assists. Unfortunate to be the one sacrificed after Johnson red card.

Wilson Odobert 8

The best of Spurs’ options on the left right now. Direct with his running and a constant threat down the left. Took his goal well to double Spurs’ lead.

Randal Kolo Muani 7

Wasteful display, somehow missing two huge chances before the break, but then a stunning touch to provide the assist for Odobert’s goal. A real handful up front.

Substitutes:

Joao Palhinha (Simons 61’) 8

Came on to help secure the lead but ended up extending it after bursting forward to support the attack. Superb cameo.

Richarlison (Kolo Muani 72’) 4

Hit the bar with a header and then again when blazing penalty against the woodwork. Could argue he was unlucky but a ruthless striker scores both.

Djed Spence (Udogie 72’) 6

Given minutes off the bench after knock left him as a doubt for this match. Couple of decent bursts down the left.

Kevin Danso (Romero 72’) 6

Cruised through the final 20 minutes with Copenhagen offering no attacking threat.

Dane Scarlett (Odobert 80’) 7

Did superbly to win the penalty, which he clearly wanted to take. Really impressive in his first minutes of the season.
