Spurs’ interim head coach has exited the club following last weekend’s abject 3-0 home defeat by relegation rivals Nottingham Forest that left them sitting 17th, only one place and a solitary point above the Premier League’s bottom three.

In a statement on Sunday, Spurs said: “We can confirm that it has been mutually agreed for head coach Igor Tudor to leave the club with immediate effect.

“Tomislav Rogic and Riccardo Ragnacci have also left their respective roles of goalkeeping coach and physical coach.

“We thank Igor, Tomislav and Riccardo for their efforts during the past six weeks, in which they worked tirelessly. We also acknowledge the bereavement that Igor has recently suffered and send our support to him and his family at this difficult time.

“An update on a new head coach will be provided in due course.”

Tudor was only appointed last month as the short-term successor to the sacked Thomas Frank and it was suggested that he could be in the running for the permanent job in the summer if things went well.

However, the immediate impact expected and witnessed during previous managerial stints with the likes of Juventus crucially never materialised, with a disastrous start to his reign bringing four successive defeats by Arsenal, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Atletico Madrid.

They trailed 4-0 after only 22 minutes in the latter game and goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was substituted early in the defining moment of the Croatian’s tenure.

Tottenham, still beset by injury problems, appeared to have begun to turn a corner under Tudor as Richarlison’s late goal earned a spirited draw away at Liverpool before they then beat Atletico at home in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, bowing out 7-5 on aggregate.

Spurs received enormous backing from fans ahead of a crunch six-pointer against Forest, but were brushed aside in the second half courtesy of goals from Igor Jesus, Morgan Gibbs-White and Taiwo Awoniyi, greatly exacerbating fears over a first relegation from the top-flight since 1977 and leading to more intense speculation over Tudor’s position.

Tudor was unable to conduct post-match media duties after being informed of a family bereavement, with Tottenham offering condolences on Monday after confirming the passing of his father, Mario.

Tudor’s successor will have seven games in which to prevent a disastrous relegation for Spurs, who are away to Sunderland after the international break and also travel to Wolves, Aston Villa and Chelsea before the end of the campaign, plus hosting Brighton, Leeds and Everton.
