Spurs have made the Italian international a top transfer target under manager Roberto De Zerbi and have reportedly tabled a £275,000-a-week contract – the highest in Spurs history – to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the next six years.

However, matching the player’s personal demands is only half the battle. Spurs must still reach an agreement with Newcastle United, who are proving to be tough negotiators.

Tottenham saw an initial £75 million bid firmly rejected by the Magpies earlier this month and were told to return with a higher offer.

Newcastle are determined to hold out for £100 million for the midfielder, who joined St James’ Park from AC Milan for £55 million in 2023.

Meeting this nine-figure asking price would see Spurs smash their club transfer record, set last summer when they paid £51.8 million to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.

While the transfer fee alone is staggering, the full scope of the deal highlights an astronomical investment.

Factoring in a £100 million transfer fee, £86 million in wages and further expenses in agent fees, the total commitment to secure Tonali could reach £200 million.

Nonetheless, Spurs remain determined to land their man and are also in discussions with West Ham United over a deal for Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
