Toulouse have appointed Jens Berthel Askou as head coach. The club said in a statement that the 43-year-old arrives from Motherwell and brings promises of attractive football.
He replaces Carles Martinez Novell, who departs after three seasons in charge. This will be Askou’s first experience in a major European league.
Across a decade in coaching, begun as an assistant in Denmark’s second tier, he has worked widely. He won a League and Cup double in 2020 with Torshavn in the Faroe Islands, assisted at Sparta Prague and Copenhagen, and later managed Göteborg before Motherwell. A former centre-back, he made 317 senior appearances.
Seen as an ideal fit for Toulouse’s identity and ambitions, his profile emphasises leadership, dynamic and attractive football, and trust in youth. The appointment sits within a long-term project built on collective strength and player development.
Motherwell’s fourth-place finish came behind Celtic, Rangers and Heart of Midlothian, and brought a place in the Conference League qualifiers. Askou also collected two manager-of-the-month awards during the campaign.
He set out an ambition to build a brave, attack-minded identity to excite supporters and players. The club did not disclose the length of his contract. Since 2015, he has worked across 10 clubs as an assistant or head coach.
