A chaotic transfer window is at an end with a frenzied deadline day taking the Premier League’s total spending past £3bn in a record-breaking summer.

The defining saga of the window finally reached a conclusion just hours before the window shut as Alexander Isak at last got the move he wanted to Liverpool. A terse statement from Newcastle United showed just how bad the falling out had been on Tyneside between the club and the wantaway striker - though they did have time to make their own move for another forward who had made his intention to leave clear in Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. Piero Hincapie, meanwhile, has bolstered Arsenal’s defensive options.

It looked for a long time like Liverpool would sign Marc Guehi, too, in a major deadline-day double deal, but despite paperwork being submitted for the transfer, the defender remains a Crystal Palace player. Emiliano Martinez also remains at Aston Villa after links with Manchester United - but with the window still open in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, could he, Raheem Sterling and others yet make a move?

Ilkay Gundogan leaves Manchester City on free transfer

Ilkay Gundogan has left Manchester City for the second time in three years after agreeing to move to Turkish club Galatasaray on a free transfer.

Gundogan joined the club for the first time in 2016 where he featured 188 times and famously led the team in their treble winning season of 2022/23 before saying an emotional goodbye and leaving the club to join Barcelona.

A year later he returned to City and made a further 33 appearances for the club but has not featured at all in any of City’s three Premier League matches this year amid a squad rebuild under Pep Guardiola.

How Liverpool could line up with Alexander Isak – and what happens to Hugo Ekitike?

Despite winning the league at a canter last season, Liverpool quickly identified a recognised number nine as their main summer target, with Darwin Nunez failing last term before his move to Al-Hilal.

But while the arrival of Alexander Isak will excite Liverpool fans, it does bring up questions over the signing of Hugo Ekitike, who plays in the same centre forward position as the Sweden striker but will surely be moved to accommodate him.

Why Saudi clubs are scaling back their spending – and what it means for the transfer window

Saudi Pro League (SPL) clubs could be scaling back their free-spending ways, and it could have wider implications for the transfer market as a whole.

SPL clubs have spent more than $1.5billion since its 2023 boom, which included the prized capture of Cristiano Ronaldo that paved the way for players to move to Saudi Arabia on wages European clubs could not compete with.

But sky-rocketing transfer fees and eye-watering salary packages, which once sounded the death knell for the Chinese Super League, may be a thing of the past after new regulations were announced by the Saudi Ministry of Sport on July 1.

Lamine Yamal has weighed in on Chelsea’s failed speculative bid for his teammate Fermín Lopez in a chat with TVE.

Barcelona’s star man suggested the deal was never going to happen: “We were joking with Fermín about moving to England… But he's happy at Barcelona. No one wants to leave.

“We asked him about that bid from England but Fermín said he’s happy here, he had no plans to leave.”

Alexander Isak releases statement to Newcastle fans after ‘unforgettable years’

Alexander Isak has addressed the Newcastle fans for the first time since completing his deadline day transfer to Liverpool, concluding a messy saga that has dominated the summer.

Newcastle, who had insisted that Isak was not for sale, eventually allowed the 25-year-old to leave after he went on strike and accused them of breaking promises to them, before they were eventually able to sign replacements.

Isak helped deliver Newcastle’s first trophy in 70 years last season, scoring in their 2-1 Carabao Cup final win over the Reds in March, but his defiance meant he departed St. James’ Park on extremely sour terms, with fans displaying banners branding the Swede a “rat”.

The 25-year-old has nevertheless expressed has gratitude to the club and its supporters upon his exit.
