French midfielder Paul Pogba has just completed an 18-month suspension for consuming a banned substance.
He was initially banned for four years, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced the punishment after concluding that he did not intentionally take the substance.
During his suspension, he mutually terminated his contract with Juventus, leaving him as a free agent.
Described as ‘fantastic’ by former manager Ole Gunner Solskjaer, Pogba has been cleared to resume playing and linked with a return to Manchester United.
However, journalist Fabrizio Romano has played down reports linking the World Cup-winning midfielder with a move to United (via YouTube).
He said: “We have seen stories recently about Pogba returning to Man United, but my information is there is nothing to it.
“I am not aware of any negotiations between Pogba and United. I have nothing concrete on this, but I will let you know if that changes.
“Man United are heading in a different direction. They are focused on investing in young and talented players like Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.
“As far as I know, Pogba is currently a free agent and available to sign for any club whenever he chooses.”
Pogba divided opinion during his two stints at United, contributing 39 goals and 48 assists in 233 appearances across all competitions.
A return to Old Trafford seems unlikely, especially given concerns over his fitness after such a long absence and his age as he approaches the twilight of his career.
His lack of fitness and age would also make it difficult for him to adapt to manager Ruben Amorim’s playing style.
Amorim prefers a two-man midfield that demands high energy, a quality Pogba lacks.
United have prioritised signing younger players. They have already recruited eight U21 players, highlighting their vision for the club’s future.
While United’s midfield needs reinforcements, Pogba would not provide the required quality at this stage of his career.
