Trinity Rodman has signed a three-season, six million dollar contract with Washington Spirit, a landmark for the NWSL as it seeks to keep its new icon.
According to L'Équipe, it ranks among the two most lucrative in the women’s game, alongside Aitana Bonmati’s terms at Barcelona.
The deal signals a shift reminiscent of MLS’s 2007 'Beckham Rule'. Rodman called it a historic turning point and said months of pay wrangling with the league had ended.
Drafted in 2021 at 18, the forward won the title with the Spirit in year one and was named rookie of the year. She has 47 caps and 11 goals for the United States, who won Olympic gold in 2024 with a 1-0 win over Brazil.
Paul Kennedy said her surname may have opened doors, yet her profile rests on consistent club and country displays. He added the league could not risk more exits after Naomi Girma and Alyssa Thompson moved to Chelsea.
Under Michele Kang, who also presides at Olympique Lyonnais, the Spirit reached the last two NWSL finals and won last season’s Challenge Cup. Kang was central to talks that set the salary framework for this renewal.
Rodman endured recurring back issues over the past year, limiting her to 17 appearances. Even so, her charisma and high-profile relationship with tennis player Ben Shelton have attracted Adidas, Oakley and Red Bull. Those partnerships brought about 2.6 million dollars in 2025, now set to almost double with this Washington deal.
