FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a post that he met United States president Donald Trump on Tuesday and that Trump guaranteed Iran’s participation at World Cup 2026, reiterating that the team would be welcome to compete, with kick-off only 93 days away. Infantino added that the tournament is needed now more than ever and thanked Trump for his support, saying football brings people together.
The 2026 finals will be staged in Mexico, Canada and the United States from 11 June.
Iran will play three matches in the United States, against New Zealand in Los Angeles on 15 June, Belgium in Los Angeles on 21 June, and Egypt in Seattle on 26 June.
In November, Trump said players and coaching staff from Iran would receive visas to enter the United States, although not fans, citing national security.
After United States and Israeli attacks against Iran on 28 February, Iranian federation president Mehdi Taj questioned whether the team would take part, saying it was unlikely they could look forward to the tournament and that sporting leaders would decide.
