Listening to Thomas Tuchel describe Arsenal’s summer recruit, Noni Madueke, some Gooners may well be left red faced.
Despite the hype surrounding his arrival, three games into his Arsenal career, Madueke has yet to truly impress.
He has not looked as dangerous as many hoped and he is yet to show the ruthless edge Bukayo Saka brings in Arsenal colours. Questions have also been raised over his defensive work rate.
Heading into the September international break, plenty of Gooners were unsure what to expect from the ex Chelsea man. But his performances for England have sparked fresh optimism.
With Bukayo Saka sidelined, Thomas Tuchel turned to Madueke on the right wing and what a revelation the Gunner proved to be.
Against Andorra, he capped off a lively display with a deflected effort that led to a Christian Garcia own goal.
Then came Serbia. As England ran riot in a 5-0 win, Madueke delivered a top class performance, crowned with a well taken goal.
Tuchel was full of praise post match, highlighting the talent Arsenal now have on their hands. As quoted by Sky Sports, the England Manager said:
“He has the speed and the ability to win one on one duels. He has the speed.
“For me, the most important thing is I am very happy he scored today and was involved in goals, this is something he needs to add to his game.
“Efficiency. Being involved in goals with assists and finishes. That is why I am very happy today, he played with hunger and directness.
“On top of that, he needs to stay focused. I am most happy about his attitude, the reaction after ball losses, the work he put in to help Reecey [James].”

Two things stand out from Tuchel’s comments.
Firstly, if Madueke can contribute defensively as well as in attack, then he is far from the liability some feared.
Secondly, his ability to beat defenders one on one was a key reason Arsenal moved for him. The Gunners needed someone who could replicate the threat Saka poses. If Madueke is delivering that on international duty, it is surely only a matter of time before he does so at club level.
Ultimately, the hope is that he adds goals to his game. Doing so for England should give him the confidence to carry that form into Arsenal colours.
