Turkiye return to the World Cup stage after a 22-year absence when they face Australia in Vancouver.
Head coach Vincenzo Montella has built a fluid 4-2-3-1 system that emphasises ball retention and creative spark. The Crescent-Stars enter Group D as firm favourites to progress alongside the host nation.
They carry substantial momentum into the tournament, having compiled an excellent eight-match unbeaten run. Montella will demand that his technically gifted squad dictate the tempo early to unlock a stubborn Australian defensive block.
Montella faces mixed fortunes on the medical front ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated tournament opener. Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz is a major doubt to feature after sustaining a painful calf injury.
That said, Real Madrid sensation Arda Guler has fully recovered from a late-season knock and is ready to star. Bright full-back Ferdi Kadioglu has also returned to full training after sitting out their final warm-up fixture.
Ugurcan Cakir will start between the posts behind a settled central defensive pairing featuring Merih Demiral and Abdulkerim Bardakci. Zeki Celik and Eren Elmali will operate on the defensive flanks.
Captain Hakan Calhanoglu will dictate play from a deep-lying midfield pivot alongside the industrious Ismail Yuksek. Orkun Kokcu and Baris Alper Yilmaz will look to exploit spaces in wide areas and support Guler. Up front, young striker Deniz Gul is expected to lead the line as the central focal point.
Turkiye predicted XI: Cakir; Celik, Demiral, Bardakci, Elmali; Calhanoglu, Yuksek; Guler, Kokcu, Yilmaz; Gul.
