Yesterday, it emerged that Abdukodur Khusanov had withdrawn from international duty with Uzbekistan due to a calf injury. The young centre-back is expected to be sidelined for two weeks. Manchester City will be hoping that Khusanov is fit to play in the Manchester derby on September 14. It has also been revealed that Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis have withdrawn from the England under-21 squad. The injuries are mounting amongst Pep Guardiola’s squad heading into the international break.
In an announcement on mancity.com, it was revealed that Rico Lewis and Nico O’Reilly have withdrawn from the England under-21 squad. Lee Carsley’s side are due to face Kazakhstan in their 2027 UEFA under-21 European Championships qualifying fixture on Monday. Lewis and O’Reilly will not take part in the match and are due to remain at the CFA to have their injuries assessed.
Pep Guardiola’s squad has been hit by injuries to begin the new season. Josko Gvardiol, Savinho, Phil Foden, Marcus Bettinelli, Mateo Kovacic and Rayan Cherki all missed Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Sunday due to injury. Abdukodur Khusanov sustained a calf injury late on during Sunday’s match. Now, Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis have suffered injuries.
Pep Guardiola will be hoping to have Rico Lewis and Nico O’Reilly first for selection when the international break ends. His side faces a congested schedule when domestic football returns. It will be a case of hands on deck for the City squad to navigate such a heavy schedule. It is hoped that O’Reilly and Lewis have been withdrawn from the England under-21 squad as a precaution rather than any serious injury issues.
