FLW’s Plymouth Argyle fan pundit has sounded out Lorent Tolaj as the next big thing at Home Park.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Plymouth Argyle have had quite a mixed start on their return to League One.
Led by Tom Cleverley, the Pilgrims currently sit 17th in the third-tier, winning three and losing five of their opening eight league matches, but they did claim a much-needed 3-2 victory away at Luton Town to help boost confidence within the playing squad.
The former Watford boss will be hopeful that this can transform their fortunes, with the Devonshire outfit needing to show much more consistency if they want to be in contention to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
Plymouth have now won three out of their last four matches after losing their first four consecutive matches this term, so hopefully the club is on the right track and can go on an upwards trajectory between now and May 2026.
Meanwhile, at Home Park, Plymouth have some very talented players on their books who are emerging as stars for the future.
There is a hope that these prodigies can help lift Plymouth back to where they want to get to over the coming years, but there’s also an acceptance that they may swiftly move on to bigger clubs if the opportunities present themselves.
With this in mind, FLW’s Plymouth Argyle fan pundit has detailed the players that he believes are the next big thing for the club.
Speaking to Football League World, Plymouth Argyle fan pundit Luke Hodge has listed Lorent Tolaj as the next big thing at Home Park, while Tegan Finn is the most exciting local talent on the Pilgrims’ books.
Luke said: “The next big thing at our club will be Lorent Tolaj. I know he’s been around, but he’s only 23-years-old, and he’s going from strength to strength, his progression has been pretty sharp coming from Aldershot, to Port Vale and now to us.
“He’s made a hell of a difference with us, and I don’t think he’s going to be hanging around all that long, simply because there’ll be bigger clubs wanting his services, so I think Lorent Tolaj will be the next big thing.
“In terms of local talent coming up through the ranks, Tegan Finn is definitely the one to look out for out of all the youngsters we’ve got coming through.
“He’s been superb at youth level, and he’s had some bigger clubs scouting him, so I was delighted to see him sign on a professional contract just a month or two ago, to get him signed, over the line and to stay with Argyle is brilliant.
“I think under Tom Cleverley he will develop and continue to grow as a player. I think he’ll get his fair share of minutes this year as well with injuries and volume of game.
“There was a question mark over whether we should send him out on loan, but I think if he wasn’t going to be playing as much as he potentially will this year, then I think a loan would have been extremely good for him.
"If he’s going to get minutes in the Vertu Trophy and league games, then at 17, continuing to stay with Argyle and train with the first-team and learn under the coaching staff will be really beneficial this year, and then they can reassess the situation either at Christmas or the end of the year.”
When looking at the Plymouth Argyle squad, it definitely has a group of talented individuals that can be successful this term, but the key factor will be that they find consistent form.
In terms of first-team quality, Lorent Talaj is someone who is making a name for himself and is enduring a meteoric rise through the English pyramid.
After scoring 19 goals in 2023-24 with Aldershot Town, he moved up to the EFL in League Two with Port Vale and immediately hit the ground running by netting 14 times and providing eight assists from 37 games as Darren Moore's men clinched promotion.
He swiftly moved to Home Park this summer, viewing Plymouth as the club to be at to help realise his Championship ambitions, and he has already opened his account against Stockport County and notched an assist at Kenilworth Road last week.
He is certainly a player on the rise, but admittedly, he hasn’t stayed at any of the clubs he’s been at in recent times for long due to his goalscoring exploits, so it will be unsurprising to see him leave Plymouth if he has a successful personal season and the club doesn’t gain promotion.
However, it would allow the club to gain a very sizeable fee for his services if he scores a plethora of goals, particularly as they have tied him down to a deal until the summer of 2029.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Tegan Finn looks like he will be the next local star that the Plymouth faithful adore.
The winger has emerged through the youth ranks and has featured on three occasions so far this term, with Cleverley even handing him a start in their defeat to Leyton Orient back in August, a clear showing that there is plenty of faith in the youngster to help contribute in the third-tier.
As he is integrated into the first-team picture, he has the potential to be a roaring success in League One over the coming months, helping Argyle to get back into the second-tier after last season’s disappointment as well as allowing the club to be significantly boosted financially if a bigger club wants to secure his signature later down the line.
Those are two players that should be generating excitement for all connected with Plymouth, and time will tell if they can live up to all the hype and expectations.
