Real Madrid are making careful squad decisions as they prepare for their upcoming Copa del Rey clash against Real Sociedad.

As part of that, a recent report from Rodra (h/t Madrid Xtra) confirms that two key players—Federico Valverde and Thibaut Courtois—will not be part of the squad for the match.

This is because the club is prioritising the fitness of their most important players, ensuring that they avoid any unnecessary risks at this critical stage of the season.

With so much still to play for, the coaching staff does not want to push players who are experiencing physical discomfort. Valverde and Courtois fall into this category, and as a precaution, neither will travel for the game.

Valverde has played a lot

Valverde has been a vital presence in the team throughout the season, playing a staggering 3,387 minutes across 40 matches.

Given this heavy workload, manager Carlo Ancelotti had already hinted that the Uruguayan would need a break soon.

His absence against Real Sociedad is intended to keep him fresh for upcoming challenges, ensuring he remains in peak condition when Madrid needs him the most.

Lunin will replace Courtois

For Courtois, the situation is slightly different. The Belgian goalkeeper has been recovering from a long-term injury, and this match presents an opportunity for Andriy Lunin to take centre stage.

The Ukrainian stopper has already been gaining prominence in the Copa del Rey, and this game is expected to be another chance for him to prove himself.

Apart from Valverde and Courtois, Real Madrid might make other changes to the starting XI. There is speculation that young talents like Arda Guler and Endrick could be given a chance, although their inclusion remains uncertain.

Eduardo Camavinga is expected to feature in the midfield, while Raul Asencio could partner Antonio Rudiger in defence, as David Alaba is reserved from the Atletico match.
