The world of football is gearing up for a huge summer, with the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico fast approaching. With this year’s tournament set to be the biggest yet, 48 countries will take centre stage to do battle, with some of the world’s best players hoping to etch their names into the history books.

It is also a fine opportunity for fledgling youngsters to burst onto the scene and kick-start their careers with a memorable moment or two in the showpiece occasion.

United starlet surprise call-up

This will certainly be the case for Manchester United youngster Tyler Fletcher, who has been handed a shock call-up to Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad, which will be looking to spring a surprise in the summer. As reported by BBC Sport, the 19-year-old has earned his inclusion despite playing just 17 minutes of senior football before his international debut against Curaçao on 30 May.

Tyler, son of United legend Darren Fletcher, chose to represent the same country as his famous father, while his twin Jack has opted to represent England should he get the nod in the coming years. Tyler’s decision has certainly paid dividends as things stand, with the experience of going to a World Cup invaluable for his growth in the early stage of his career.

He will also have one up on his dad who, despite winning 80 caps for his country, never got to play in a World Cup with the Tartan Army.

United pride

Fletcher will be one of many Reds representing their respective countries in the tournament, and Michael Carrick will no doubt have a keen eye on all of his players throughout. United’s academy director Stephen Torpey has spoken on Fletcher’s call-up and could not hide his delight for the Carrington graduate.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Torpey described his “obvious pride” in the young man and praised his attitude off the pitch as well as on it, tipping Tyler for a bright future in the game.

“I am sure the family are as proud of Tyler today as they were before this opportunity came around because he is a lovely young person and great to have around our training ground, which is a credit to the family.

“Of course, it is not something you take for granted. It is a fantastic opportunity for him but hopefully, it is not the last one.

“How he conducts himself is really important but how he represents his family, his nation and his football club is something we are very confident about. Hopefully he gets a chance to show what he is about,” he said.

While it is unlikely Fletcher will get too much game time in the United States, having the chance to travel with the squad will be a huge plus for his development, and he will no doubt be ready if he is required to help his country.

Steve Clarke’s side will look to get out of a tricky-looking group that includes Brazil and Morocco, but will be hoping a good win against whipping boys Haiti will be enough to see them qualify as one of the best of the third-placed sides.

From there, they will fancy themselves to cause an upset and potentially push on to the latter rounds, with Fletcher waiting in the wings to play his part and maybe have a magical moment of his own before he returns to Manchester.
