U20 Women's World Cup qualifiers: South Africa snatch a 2-2 draw against Ghana
In a high-octane showdown, South Africa battled to a 2-2 draw against Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium on February 8. Here’s the match summary from the first leg of this third-round qualifier for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Poland.
This clash lived up to all expectations. The hosts broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute thanks to Agnes Yeboah (1-0). The South Africans hit back in the 48th minute (1-1) through Khwezi, who finished off a brilliant team move. Determined to regain the lead, the Black Princesses struck again from a corner, converted by Linda Owusu in the 52nd minute (2-1).
But Zoe October unleashed a thunderbolt in the 60th minute. With a powerful strike from outside the box, she found the back of the net to level the score at 2-2. The Ghanaians thought they had snatched victory, but Jessica Appiah's goal was ruled out for offside in the 87th minute. Ghana pressed hard, but the Basetsana held their ground and head home with a psychological edge.
The return leg is scheduled for February 14 at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
