UEFA and 55 federations vow to boycott FIFA events over World Cup privatisation plan

UEFA and its 55 member federations will boycott FIFA competitions in protest at plans to privatise the World Cup.

UEFA said in a statement that neither it nor its national associations will take part, rejecting any transfer of ownership of the World Cup and other FIFA competitions to private investors.

The proposal would sell a minority stake to investment funds and companies. After Gianni Infantino set a 19 September deadline for confederations to decide, UEFA convened an assembly.

At the meeting, none of the associations backed the proposal.

UEFA argued the World Cup is a sporting legacy built over generations by players, national teams and supporters worldwide, not an investment product.

It pledged absolute determination to oppose the project and insisted the tournament belongs to football and is not for sale.
