UEFA has decided not to pursue disciplinary action against Bayern’s Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich over their cautions in the 1-6 win at Atalanta. According to L'Équipe, the European body’s disciplinary panel will not open a case.
The bookings came during Tuesday night’s last-16 first leg in Bergamo. The pair had been one caution from a ban and are suspected to have sought suspensions for the return next Wednesday at the Allianz Arena in Munich, a match with little riding on it.
Olise delayed taking a corner despite the referee’s repeated prompts when Bayern were 6-0 up, and was shown yellow. Kimmich adopted a similar approach before a late free-kick.
Referee Espen Eskas made no mention of any suspicious conduct in his report, which contributed to UEFA’s decision not to proceed. Proving intent in such situations is considered difficult.
By contrast, in 2019 Sergio Ramos boasted after a last-16 first leg between Real Madrid and Ajax that he had forced a booking, and was banned for two matches rather than one.
