Switzerland have named Valencia duo Filip Ugrinic and Eray Cömert in a provisional squad for the upcoming international window, reflecting the club’s recent uptick.
According to Superdeporte, Murat Yakin’s side will play friendlies against Germany and Norway at the end of March, the last run-out before preliminary call-ups for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
For Ugrinic, the inclusion is a significant step towards regaining prominence with the national team. The midfielder has only four senior caps, and his last appearance came against Spain in November 2024 in a UEFA Nations League group match. His current form at Mestalla has brought him back into consideration.
Cömert’s situation differs, as he is more established internationally with 18 caps and experience of a World Cup. His most recent call-up was roughly a year ago. At Valencia he has become a regular starter, helped by consecutive injuries in defence, has scored key goals and gained influence in the dressing room.
The centre-back’s contract runs out at the end of the season. A renewal seemed unlikely a few months ago, but his performances have shifted the picture. Valencia could face the paradox of a player pushing for the World Cup while being unable to keep him if they do not act in time.
