Both teams already secured their Bundesliga status for next season with weeks to spare. In fact, it's rather a special occasion for Dr. Felix Brych as he is retiring from refereeing after his 359th Bundesliga game.

Brych held the record for officiating a record number of Bundesliga games. Meanwhile, Union Berlin’s Kevin Volland hoped to make his last Bundesliga appearance before his move to 3. Liga side 1860 Munich.

However, the former German international was not part of the five changes by Steffen Baumgart from last week's home defeat to Heidenheim. Instead, Alexander Schwolow gets the starting nod before leaving the club in the summer as a free agent. Homegrown talent David Preu also makes the starting lineup for the first time in Bundesliga.

Augsburg only made two changes from their 4-0 defeat to Stuttgart, but Phillip Tietz's introduction was what made the difference in the first half. The striker was in Jess Thorup's XI for the first time since matchday 27, and Samuel Essende's red card in Stuttgart was the big reason behind the decision.

Tietz scored the opening goal for the hosts in the 41st minute after a dominant half from the hosts. Chrislain Matsima had a superb debut season in Germany, and he played a big role in the opening goal of the game as he set up Tietz's seventh of the campaign.

The start of the second half was a bit slower before five substitutions were made around the hour mark. Twenty minutes before the end, Union levelled the score through Andrej Ilić. Benedict Hollerbach, who is the club's top-scorer, played a big part as Finn Dahmen could only parry his solo effort to the path of the Serbian striker.

The visitors were keen to go five games unbeaten on the road for the first time in their history, and the substitute striker's goal was what they deserved for an improved showing after the break. And, they even scored yet another late goal in the final matchday of the Bundesliga season to achieve their club record.

Ilić volleyed Union's winner in the 94th minute after an assist from Rani Khedira. The midfielder, who extended his contract at the club this week, famously scored Union's late goal that sent them to Champions League a couple of seasons ago.

There were also similar incidents of last-gasp goals by Union in the final matchday of a season, including one to secure safety. The win means the visitor ended the campaign with 40 points. Augsburg missed a chance to climb to tenth place in the standings.
